JEFFERSONVILLE — In their meeting on Monday, October 13, the Town of Callicoon addressed a resident’s complaint of a dangerous section of Gulf Road, a mostly unlit, rural roadway traversing farmland that connects Callicoon Center to its northern neighbor Roscoe.
After hearing Supervisor Tom Bose’s explanation of the complaint and the site logistics, the board approved the request to reduce the speed limit to 30 miles per hour for a section of the road in an effort to make the area safer.
Bose called it “a very legitimate request” citing pictures and information related by the resident.
He cited a number of traffic accidents, including the tragic double fatality of two pedestrians in that same area a couple of years ago.
Bose was referencing an accident that occurred on Memorial Day, May 29, 2023, when two pedestrians walking along the roadway around 3 a.m. were struck and killed by a motorist.
Explaining the multi-step process of a speed limit reduction request, Bose said it must first be approved by the town; then it gets sent to the county, where it is reviewed by the Department of Public Works, which in turn passes it onto the state. The state will then conduct a study to determine whether or not the speed limit reduction is warranted.
Board member Charlie Schadt made the motion, seconded by board member Scott Gaebel, and the approval passed unanimously.
