Callicoon justice retires, Town reorganizes

Posted

JEFFERSONVILLE –– The Hon. Edward T. McKenna recently announced his retirement as a Town of Callicoon Justice.

On Monday, the Callicoon Town Board passed a resolution to go from having two town justices to one. Town Law Section 60-a authorizes a town board to reduce the number of town justices from two to one by a resolution subject to permissive referendum.

According to Supervisor Tom Bose, the Town’s case load is something one judge can handle.

“Judge McKenna has been a Town Justice for 25 years,” said Bose. “With his law enforcement background with the New York State Police, there’s been no better person to serve in that role and he is a wonderful person. Justice [Hon. James] Hubert has agreed to assume the duties of the entire court in a cost saving measure.”

Bose added that the move will save the Town a little over $8,000 annually.

Reorganization

Monday was also the Town’s annual reorganizational meeting.

Among official appointments made, Councilman David Kuebler will once again serve as the deputy supervisor.

Also, the Sullivan County Democrat and the River Reporter were named the Town’s official newspapers.

Furthermore, the Callicoon Town Board will continue to meet on the second Monday each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Callicoon Town Hall on 19 Legion Street in Jeffersonville.
