Care Center cuts defeated by Legislature vote, 5-4

MONTICELLO — A resolution to cut 20 positions from the Care Center at Sunset Lake failed to pass during a special meeting of the Sullivan County Legislature yesterday morning.

It was revealed that some of those Care Center employees received a call the day before the meeting informing them they were being let go, but that will not go through until further action by the legislature.

The vote was 5-4 with legislators Nadia Rajsz, Luis Alvarez, Joe Perrello, Ira Steingart and Alan Sorensen voting against it.

They stated that the resolution should go through the Health and Family Services Committee with a public discussion before it gets voted on by the full board.

The next meeting of that committee is on August 13.

Some of the legislators said they didn't know about the proposed cuts until the agenda came out the day before, with Rajsz saying she was “disgusted, disillusioned and disappointed” with the process.

Perrello added, “Considering I found out yesterday about the layoffs, not saying it's not going to happen because it is going to happen, but the legislators should have known this was going down before it happened, so I'm going to vote no today.”

Legislators Michael Brooks, Nicholas Salomone Jr., George Conklin III and Chairman Rob Doherty voted in favor of the resolution.
