Cathy Farris died on December 12 at the age of 77 after a battle with cancer. She passed relatively peacefully at the Glen Arden Health Care Center. Her brother, Peter, was with her.

Cathy was born in Concord, New Hampshire on November 13, 1948. She was the first of four children born to Paul and Priscilla Farris. Cathy grew up in New England with many years spent in the Boston area. She attended high school in Hingham, Massachusetts and went on to college at the University of Maine.

After college, Cathy worked and lived in Boston and Queens before settling in the Catskills. She worked as a bookkeeper for several businesses and nonprofits in Sullivan County.

Cathy met Dennis Caro in Monticello and they shared a life for over 35 years, first in Monticello and then for 25 years in Mountaindale where they were both active in their community. Cathy served as treasurer for the Mountaindale Action Committee and they both worked establishing and maintaining their beautiful community gardens.

Cathy was a nature lover and did a lot of hiking and swimming in the Peekamoose area and in the Gunks. She liked to draw and to paint and had a green thumb and a wide knowledge of horticulture. Her yard was always filled with lilies, iris, roses and all manner of plants. She also devoted a lot of time to animal rescue, a cause she held dear.

Cathy loved to travel when she could. She loved Maine and was particularly fond of the southwest red rock areas and the parks in Arizona and Utah. She also loved visiting Spain, France and Costa Rica.

Cathy was generous and caring, always ready to help. She was a good neighbor, a good friend and a good sister. She is survived by her brothers David and Peter. She will be missed.

Cathy was cremated at Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne. There will be a small gathering at the family plot in Machias, Maine when her ashes are interred sometime this spring.
