HURLEYVILLE — Every year in a celebration of all that is unserious, Americans tune in to see if Pennsylvania’s famed “Seer of Seers,” Punxsutawney Phil, will emerge from his den and see his shadow. Should the sun shine on that day - casting a shadow that Phil sees - he will with absolute certainty predict six more weeks of winter.

This year, the Frederick Cook Society will honor the tradition by inviting those who love winter (and those who don’t) to join them at the Sullivan County Museum for the First Annual Groundhog Day Afterparty. They will celebrate Phil’s prediction with hot chocolate, live music, and a ping-pong tournament. Prizes will be awarded to anyone who can beat Carol Smith (organizer and Little Sparrow member) at ping-pong! To register for the tournament, call 845-434-8044. 

The Afterparty will take place on Sunday, Feb. 4 from 2-4 p.m. at the County Museum, 265 Main Street, Hurleyville (snow date of Sunday, Feb. 11). Admission is free, though donations supporting the work of the Cook Society are always welcome.

The event will feature New Jersey’s own special guest guitarist, Fred Scholl, who has performed in Grateful Dead bands for over 30 years and is currently coming off a tour with the Dude of Life Band featuring Steve Pollak (of Phish fame). Local Henry Simon joins the band on vocals and guitar, and the inimitable Jeff Anderson will be on bass. 

Bill Murray, who perhaps unbeknownst to many is a fan of both Punxsutawney Phil and Phil Lesh, has also been invited to perform. His attendance is as of yet unconfirmed (and unlikely).

Oh, and while you are at the party, be sure to visit the new Frederick Cook Exhibit in the upstairs gallery of the Museum, along with the many interesting displays that showcase the history of Sullivan County!
