You know when the thermometer hits any numbers below 32 degrees, it’s that time of the year for taking a few trips down the slopes with a pair of skis, or maybe even a snowboard. Sullivan County, and the rest of New York State, has hit those ideal temperatures. The usual mood set by the winter-y setting is often held to be slow, dark and almost stuck in a stasis.

Thanks to the hardwork and upkeep from so many in our own backyards, Sullivan County has many opportunities to break away from that notion, even in the dead of winter. In fact, the area is even known for its abilty to inspire chilly thrills for all ages and interests.

Skiing of course is one of those activities that comes around only for a little bit of the year. If you’re looking to break out the sticks and make some good memories, consider stopping by Holiday Mountain Ski and Fun Park, or the Villa Roma Ski Hill, or both!

But it’s not just on the tippy-tops of the mountains that are seeing the effects of winter – lakes and other large bodies of water are also the epicenter of some classic frozen activities. Looking back to this weekend, dozens of people looking to raise funds for research to defeat Alzheimer’s Disease once and for all took a dip in White Lake. Our hats are off to every single one of the brave souls who embraced the shock of being submerged in icy waters, as well as to the White Lake Fire District members who ensured their safety in doing so.

From scraping the sky going downhill, to partaking in watery activities, and everything in between, there are so many ways to enjoy these frigid days in our own backyard.

Whatever you are thinking of doing outdoors, you definitely don’t want to put off going if you plan to in this winter. The weather has been so fickle, who knows how long these conditions will last? Plus, winter is only here once a year.

As they say, ‘carpe diem’ and make the most of today!
