It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Debra Ann Barker Hester, 69, on November 27, 2024, at her home in Brunswick, GA. Debra was born on December 27, 1954, in Port Jefferson, NY, to the late George and Ann Barker.

She was the beloved mother of Christine Yarborough (DeGuise), Karen Jones (Hester), and Kimberly Hester, and a loving grandmother and great-grandmother to her cherished family.

Debra married Glenn Hester on August 20, 1983, in Afton, NY, and together they shared many years of love and companionship before their divorce in 1999. Despite their separation, Debra and Glenn remained best friends, and he was by her side in her final days.

She moved to Brunswick, GA, in July 1988, where she continued to build a life surrounded by those she loved. Throughout her career, Debra was known for her hard work and compassionate spirit.

She worked as head teller at Callicoon National Bank in Callicoon, NY, before transitioning into child care, a role she loved. Most recently, she cared for children at Taylor’s Tot’s in Brunswick, Ga, where her nurturing nature touched the lives of many. Debra is survived by her children, Christine Yarborough, Kimberly Hester, and Karen Jones (Vincent Jones Jr.); her brother Paul Barker (Gin Barker) and sister Carol Barker; grandchildren Jaime Tanner, Ciera and Bryce Yarborough, TJ and Kyra Williams, and Tyrus Jones; and great-grandchildren Kyler, Paisley, Xander, and Rowan Tanner. She is also survived by her ex-husband and best friend, Glenn Hester.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Jeff and Steve Barker, her parents, Ann and George Barker, and her beloved granddaughter, Brianna Hester. Debra had a deep love for her family, and nothing made her happier than being surrounded by them, especially during the holidays—Christmas was her absolute favorite.

She also loved listening to the Bee Gees, and their music always brought her joy. Debra had a passion for crafting, doing relaxing puzzles on her computer, and shopping on Temu for her loved ones. Above all, Debra was a fighter. Diagnosed with lung cancer in early 2022, she defied expectations with her strength, courage, and resilience. Her unwavering determination to live, despite her illness, was a testament to her warrior spirit.

Debra passed peacefully at home at 1:05 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27th, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the charities Debra was most passionate about: Prevent Child Abuse America and the American Cancer Society.

A celebration of Debra’s life will be held sometime in early 2025, and the date and details will be announced to family and friends at that time. Debra will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her legacy of love, strength, and grace will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
