Donald “Red” Cornish, born October 31st, 1949, passed away Thursday, May 11th, at home, surrounded by family, after a short, but fierce battle with cancer. He was 73.

Born to Donald and Edith (Heller) Cornish of Burnside, NY, Red Cornish was many things.

He was a proud Navy Veteran, who served his country from 1968-1972. Upon returning from duty, he worked construction for 40 years and retired as a Local 17 laborer. He was also a lifetime member of the Maybrook VFW Post 2064.

A longtime resident of Parksville, Red was an avid sportsman. Fishing and hunting were among his favorite activities, always waiting for that elusive ten pointer.

He loved traveling, visiting National Parks, camping, and driving across the country with his wife, Mary.

With his enthusiasm and infectious laughter, he could make even the most mundane story sound like an epic adventure. Red was also a lover of music, always ready to bring out his guitar and sing a song.

An amazing husband and father, Red is survived by his wife, Mary, of 33 years. His son David Cornish and wife, Danielle, son Tim Cornish and wife Gina, daughter Katrina O’Connell, son Andrew Merriweather and wife Kelsi, daughter Sarah Merriweather and daughter Emily Merriweather and husband Michael.

He was a proud grandfather to all eight of his grandkids. Sophia, Maggie, Jace, Liam, Isla, Colin, Theo and Violet.

He was also a brother, survived by his sisters Donna and Kathy, not to mention numerous family members including aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

Most of all, Red was loved. His heart was kind and generous and his smile lit up the room. He will be deeply missed.
