Donald Leroy Hamilton, Sr., 84, of Grahamsville, NY, passed away peacefully at his home on November 24, 2024. Born on February 10, 1940, at Nyack Hospital to the late Roger “Pete” Hamilton and Maude Thorington, Donald lived a full and dedicated life, rooted in family, service, and hard work.
Donald grew up in New City, NY, and later lived in Congers, NY, before settling in Grahamsville. He attended New City Elementary and Clarkstown High North, where he developed a passion for mechanics that would shape his career. Donald proudly served in the United States Army before embarking on a lifelong career as a skilled mechanic. His work as an independent contractor for the United States Postal Service spanned 24 years. In addition to his work with the USPS, Donald served as a mechanic for the SYDA Foundation and owned his own garage, where he earned the respect of many for his craftsmanship and dedication.
A longtime member of the Hurleyville Fire Department, Donald was also known for his generosity, strong work ethic, and commitment to his community. He was an avid mechanic who enjoyed the challenge of fixing anything that came his way, and his skills were always sought after by family, friends, and neighbors.
In October 1962, Donald married Emma J. Newell, and together they raised a loving family. He is survived by his wife Emma, and their children: Donald Jr. (Cherie), Theresa Grafmuller (Terence), Tina Hamilton (Joe), and Bonnie Hamilton (Sam). Donald was also a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, cherished by his grandchildren Megan Marsh, Tayler Hamilton, Kristina McKay, Alexis Ortega, Sean Schrader, Dylan Schrader, Anthony Simpson, Jarret Simpson and his six great-grandchildren.
He is further survived by his siblings: Louis Faye Thorington of Georgia, Barbara of Mississippi, and Janet Mancuso of Circleville, NY. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son Timothy Hamilton.
Donald will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. A man of great integrity, he leaves behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, and love for his family and community.
Burial with full military honors will be held at a later date at Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery.
