GLEN SPEY — Emergency personnel performed a ice water rescue at Mohican Lake in Sullivan County late Tuesday night after discovering a woman stranded close by and a male victim partially immersed in frigid waters.
Their names were not immediatly released by officials. The two were reportedly ice skating when they ran into problems on the frozen lake at approximately 9 p.m. on January 7.
According to Lumberland Fire Chief Eric Robles via published reports, the man was gravely exposed to the frigid temperatures after inadvertently skating into open water about 160 feet from shore.
Multiple agencies’ emergency personnel moved quickly to save the two. When the airboat from the Lumberland Fire Department arrived on the scene, both people were successfully rescued.
After being stabilized in a Lumberland ambulance right away, the man was sent to Middletown’s Garnet Medical Center.
Due to bad weather, plans to transport the man by helicopter were shelved. The individual was extremely hypothermic, according to published sources. On Wednesday, Chief Robles was unable to provide an update on the man’s health.
The Democrat reached out to Fire Coordinator John Hauschild and Fire Chief Eric Robles they did not respond by presstime.
