Explosion rocks Monticello home

MONTICELLO -— A family that had just moved in was forced to evacuate their home after an explosion occurred on March 2, leaving one of the victims hospitalized with severe burns.

The explosion sounded at approximately 10:42 p.m. at 2 Emily St.

According to Assistant Fire Chief John Wells of the Monticello Fire Department, there were nine occupants in the house when the incident occurred Saturday night.

Village of Monticello Police Chief Mark Johnstone said that the explosion occured because of a propane leak.

As the family was about to go to bed, a massive explosion tore bricks from the outside walls and blasted the house partially off its foundation. According to the Times Union, U-Haul moving trucks were also still parked outside when the explosion occurred.

The fire department reported that one individual, a 47-year-old male, was badly injured in the basement when he reportedly went down to investigate and was taken by Mobilemedic to Garnet Medical Center in Middletown. Johnstone said that the family’s other members made it out unscathed.

On the scene was the Monticello Fire Department, the Monticello Police and Hatzalah ambulance services.

According to Wells, family members who were present at the site reportedly claimed to have smelled gas, which is why they believe the explosion occurred. Two propane tanks were also discovered by firefighters behind the home.

In addition to the external devastation, the property had “major damage” inside from fallen ceilings, walls and blown-out windows, even though it was still standing after the explosion. The fire department said that the building was condemned by code enforcement.

The Red Cross is assisting the family in finding temporary housing.
