FALLSBURG – Playing on a field with slightly uneven footing, the Fallsburg Comets boys’ varsity soccer team never missed a step, powering to an 11–2 home conference win over the Sullivan West Bulldogs on Friday.
Senior midfielder Alex Campos scored three goals in the first half to lead the Fallsburg Comets in their victory. Campos dazzled throughout the match, weaving past defenders with a combination of quick footwork, soft touch, and sharp vision. In addition to his scoring, he set up teammates with unselfish passes, helping fuel Fallsburg’s offensive surge.
The hat trick brings Campos’ season total to 13 goals through nine games.
“Alex is as good as any player you’ll see on a first-team all-state roster,” said Coach Pete Dworetzky, who took over the program from Campos’s former coach just this year.
Other key contributors included junior striker Isaac Rubio, who scored once in each half and added a highlight-reel assist to Anderson Arce in the second half. Arce, a sophomore, finished with two goals of his own and continues to stand out for his maturity and skill on the field.
Jonathan Dias delivered a strong performance on the back line, contributing defensively while also setting up his teammates and firing several quality shots on goal, including his ball that found the back of the net in the second half. Freshman Daniel Perez added to the Comets’ attack with an impressive first-half goal.
Sullivan West goalkeeper Aden Spear turned in a strong effort with several impressive saves against Fallsburg’s relentless attack. Despite his performance, the constant pressure and speed of the Comets proved too much for the Bulldogs’ defense to contain. The Bulldogs’ Aden Scardino scored one of their two goals in their defeat.
The Bulldogs are now 1-6 and will next face Monticello on October 15th at Monticello.
After the game, Coach Pete Dworetsky said, “We needed something like this…we didn’t play up to our ability against Seward the other day. We did a lot of good things today, moving the ball around, attacking, guys got some playing time who don’t usually get to play…they’re good kids, they work hard,we just want to keep getting better every day.”
Dworetsky spoke about how he feels about the team’s chances in sectionals, he added, “We played O’Neil the other day, they’re 7-0 and we had em’ till the 74th minute, then we had to play with 10 because of an unfortunate red card, and we still held our own for 20 mins. We ended up tying 2-2, so it showed them they can play with anybody.”
This powerful win secured Fallsburg’s spot in the sectionals and brought their overall record to 4-3-2, with a 2-0-1 record in League play.
The Fallsburg Comets will next face the Monticello Panthers on Tuesday, October 7th, at Monticello.
