Fallsburg high school pool is back

FALLSBURG — On Jan-uary 24 a group of Fallsburg Central School District’s (FCSD) administrators, staff, students, parents, family members, and local public officials huddled together on the steps leading to the new and greatly improved swimming pool underneath the gymnasium at the Fallsburg Junior-Senior High School.

Everyone was very happy to be there. In the words of Superintendent Dr. Ivan Katz and Board of Education President Mike Weiner, this moment was long awaited by the community of Fallsburg. It took a team of stakeholders to bring the pool back to life.

Both Dr. Katz and Mr. Weiner thanked the construction team and past and present buildings and grounds committee members in bringing the project to fruition. They extended thanks to the public for their patience and the support of the voters to provide for the swimming pool, the remake of the gymnasium and locker rooms, and the new track upgrades to athletic fields over the past few years. “It was said that the pool was decrepit and was no longer an asset,” remarked Mike Weiner. “Well as one looks at this pool, that description no longer holds water.”

One of the happiest guests was long-time FCSD physical education teacher and athletics coach Ms. Janet Carey. For years when the old swimming pool was functioning, she was busy training many Fallsburg students to become life guards for the local hotels and camps throughout Sullivan County.

The Town of Fallsburg Supervisor and Council, Sullivan County Legislators that represent the Town, and a representative from NY State Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther’s Office were happy to share this special moment. The ceremony was recorded, and will be a- vailable on the FCSD website www.fallsburgcsd.net.
