SULLIVAN COUNTY — Sullivan Fresh is once again bringing farm-fresh produce to communities facing food insecurity. Operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Sullivan County, the program continues to provide reliable access to nutritious food while supporting local farmers and empowering residents through hands-on education.
The initiative centers around its seasonal markets, which run from June through October in Liberty, Wood-ridge, Fallsburg, Loch Sheldrake and Monticello. These locations — consisting of one central market and four mobile sites — offer a wide selection of produce sourced from regional farms.
The markets accept EBT/SNAP, Fresh Connect checks, and Double Up Food Bucks to ensure that working-class families can afford to shop.
The Monticello Farmers’ Market is held Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 10 Jefferson Street, directly across from the Sullivan County Government Center. Shoppers can expect a rotating list of vendors, seasonal produce, and special summer activities. Free parking makes access easy for both locals and visitors.
In addition to the Monticello site, the Sullivan Fresh Mobile Market operates four weekly stops across the county during July through October. Stops include Liberty’s Public Health Services office and Woodridge on Tuesdays, and Fallsburg Town Hall and Loch Sheldrake on Wednesdays. This rotating schedule brings fresh food directly into underserved areas, eliminating transportation barriers and helping more families shop closer to home.
Sullivan Fresh also offers weekly cooking demonstrations at the markets. Attendees leave with useful nutrition tips and receive Sullivan Fresh Bucks, which can be used to buy groceries right after the class. Year-round support is provided through the Sullivan Fresh Community Cupboard.
Designed to serve working-class households, it helps bridge the gap between seasons and alleviates the financial burden of grocery shopping.
Beyond food access, the Sullivan Fresh initiative fosters a sense of community and connection. By encouraging local shopping and offering shared learning experiences, the program brings neighbors together and builds lasting relationships between residents and farmers.
It also strengthens the regional food economy by giving local growers more opportunities to sell directly to consumers.
