Fire at adult home displaces residents to NYC

JEFFERSONVILLE - A structure fire on July 21 at the Jeffersonville Adult Home property has led to the closing of the home for 48 men and women, some of whom have lived there for 20 or 30 years.

Most of the residents suffer from physical or mental limitations that require assistance and monitoring. The facility, a conglomeration of several old buildings attached to each other, is on Route 52, within walking distance of Jeffersonville’s stores and eateries.

On July 31, the buildings were closed and residents were ferried to facilities in the Bronx and Queens and elsewhere in New York State by the Brooklyn-based W Group – owner of the Jeff home and numerous other adult homes and assisted living residences.

It is unclear what will happen with the facility, which was launched in the 1970s and has had several owners.

Last week, an anonymous employee who had worked at the home, said that the W Group found it too costly to do repairs and were shutting down for good.

However, an official from the W Group named Mosag said, “It’s closed for now and we’ll open it up bigger and better.”

Mosag declined to give any more information.

The structure fire at 10:40 p.m. on Friday attracted not only the Jeffersonville fire department but also firefighters from Bethel, Youngsville, Callicoon Center and Hortonville.

Reportedly, the fire began in the basement of one of the unoccupied buildings.

Each of the buildings’ windows now bear signs from the Village of Jeffersonville’s Building Department and code enforcement official Charles Nystrom: “ORDER TO VACATE: UNSAFE STRUCTURE.
