LIBERTY — The White Sulphur Springs Fire Department responded to the scene of a structure fire on Chaffee Road in the Town of Liberty on Wednesday afternoon around 3:35 p.m.

Smoke could be seen rising above the trees from miles away as a second alarm was called and multiple fire departments made their way to the scene at 35 Chaffee Road to lend aid.

Assisting White Sulphur Springs were fire departments from Hortonville, Liberty, Swan Lake, Jeffersonville, Loch Sheldrake, Kauneonga Lake, Livingston Manor, Youngsville, Grahamsville, and Callicoon Center. Also assisting was the Town of Bethel FAST Team, Livingston Manor EMS, Sullivan County Bureau of Fire, Sullivan County Fire Investigation Team, Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police.

The White Sulphur Springs Fire Department said they operated at the scene for several hours, even dealing with water supply issues at one point.

Multiple tankers were required to bring water to the scene which ultimately brought the fire under control.

Reporting to the Sullivan County Legislature’s Public Safety and Law Enforcement Committee on Thursday, Fire Coordinator John Hauschild said that 13 people were displaced due to the fire.
