SULLIVAN COUNTY — Former Sullivan County District 3 Legislator Michael Brooks passed away on March 30. He was 66. In the days following, Brooks was remembered lovingly by colleagues, friends and family members for his life of service and love of giving.

His obituary, courtesy of Colonial Family of Funeral Homes, noted that Brooks not only lived the life of an exemplary civil servant as a twelve year member of the Tri-Valley Central School Board with four years as president, a member of the Neversink Planning and Town boards in addition to his four-year tenure as Vice Chair of the County Legislature, but lived as a family man and good friend to many.

Brooks was a fan of the Oakland A’s and LA Rams, and his passion for sports melded into his every day life as a little league and softball coach.

He is survived by his loving wife, Donna Brooks, his parents, Charlotte and Clayton Brooks; his sisters, Faith Osterhout and Brenda Devore; his brother, David Brooks; his son, Cylus Brooks-Ambrosi; his step-daughter, Teresa Burger; and many other relatives.

“His commitment to the education of the community’s children and the growth of local schools was unwavering,” the obituary read. “His leadership, integrity, and vision shaped much of the local government during his tenure.

“Michael’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him, but his legacy of commitment to the community, his family, and his principles will live on,” the obituary continued. “He was a man of action, deeply committed to making the world around him a better place for all. He will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, and the many lives he touched through his years of service and love.”

His funeral was held yesterday, Thursday, April 3 at Colonial Memorial Funeral Home in Woodbourne, where friends, former colleagues and loved ones were encouraged to leave donations to the Sundown Methodist Church and together say their goodbyes to the gentle and dutiful civil servant. See his full obituary on page 2B.

A man who

touched many lives

As the community continues to mourn and celebrate Mike Brooks’ life, words of critical acclaim and gratitude were shared. Below are only some of the sentiments shared on the former County Legislator:

“Michael’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him, but his legacy of commitment to the community, his family, and his principles will live on. He was a man of action, deeply committed to making the world around him a better place for all. He will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, and the many lives he touched through his years of service and love.” – Mike’s wife, Donna Arvanetes Brooks

“I’m saddened. Although we were on opposite sides in our political affiliation, I agreed with him many times during the four years we served together. He was a gentle soul, respectful and kind and I’m going to miss him very much.” – County Legislature Chair Nadia Rajsz

“I have known Mike for 25-30 years, and his family as well. He was an outstanding person and citizen. He was gentle, and always thought before speaking. He has done a lot of things and unfortunately lost re-election at the loss of the county at that point. He’s going to be missed, Mike.” – Sullivan County Republican Committee Chair Greg Goldstein.

“Mike was a great man and a gentle soul who was always driven to do the right thing and serve the public. We are all without words.” – Sullivan County Sheriff Mike Schiff

“He was a tireless advocate for his community and a dedicated public servant, serving as a school board member, town councilman, and Sullivan County Legislator. His passion and commitment left a lasting impact and I will always be grateful for his counsel, guidance and friendship.” – New York Senator Peter Oberacker

“I had tears in my eyes when I heard. He was a decent, wonderful human being.” – Susan Brown Otto, Secretary of the Sullivan County Republican Committee.

“A great friend. A man of conviction who was willing to take the heat for what he thought was right. All I ever need to know about a person is to know what they thought of Mike Brooks. It says it all.” – Former County Legislature Chair Robert Doherty
