Four Sullivan County villages to hold elections

SULLIVAN COUNTY – Four of the county’s seven villages will hold elections on Wednesday, March 18 for positions ranging from mayor to trustee to court justice.

Elections are normally held on a Tuesday, but with the St. Patrick’s Day holiday falling on Tuesday, March 17 they were pushed to the next day.

Two other villages – Wood-ridge and Bloomingburg –hold elections in November while Liberty had no election this year.

We will have the results from Wednesday’s elections in the Friday, March 20 Democrat.

Village of Ateres

The Village of Ateres will hold an election on Wednesday, March 18 from noon to 9 p.m. at the Village Hall, 4656 State Route 42, Kiamesha Lake.

Three incumbents are running for re-election as write-in candidates. They are: Mayor Eleizer Klein; and Trustees Hershel Neiman and Zev Tarkieltaub, all for two-year terms.

The village was formed in 2024, breaking off from both the Town of Thompson and Town of Fallsburg. It holds meetings on the first Sunday of every month at 3:30 p.m.

Village of Jeffersonville

The Village of Jeffersonville will hold its village election on Wednesday, March 18, during which two incumbents, Gregory Brewer and Brad Haberli, will run unopposed for two separate seats as trustees for a two-year term. Voting will take place from noon to 9 p.m. at 17 Center Street in Jeffersonville.

Village of Monticello

The village elections in Monticello will take place on March 18 at the Monticello Firehouse located at 23 Jefferson Street. Polls are open from noon to 9 p.m.

Several candidates are vying for office. Incumbent Trustees Gordon Jenkins and John Barbarite are running for re-election on the Democratic line for two available trustee seats. Challenging them on the Independent line is Aron Grunwald.

Also on the ballot is Douglas Solomon, who is running for Village Justice. As of press time, Solomon is running unopposed.

Village of Wurtsboro

Voters in the Village of Wurtsboro will head to the polls March 18 to fill a four-year Village Trustee seat, though the race will appear on the ballot as a write-in only election after no candidates filed nominating petitions.

Village Clerk and Treasurer Gina Langowsky confirmed that the seat currently held by Trustee Lyman Holmes is up for election this year. Holmes, who has served the village for many years, is believed to be planning to retire from the board.

Langowsky said the village received several inquiries from residents interested in the position, but no petitions were submitted before the filing deadline.

As a result, voters will be asked to write in the name of a candidate when casting ballots for the trustee seat. Under New York village election rules, the individual receiving the most valid votes may assume the position if they accept the office.

Polls will be open from noon to 9 p.m. March 18 at the Village of Wurtsboro, 7 Pennsylvania Ave., Wurtsboro.
