ELDRED – From the opening jump ball, this matchup between the Eldred Yellowjackets and the Sullivan West Bulldogs pushed the pace. But the fourth quarter was the deciding factor in Eldred’s 62-50 win. Trai Kaufmann closed out the first quarter with a fadeaway jumper to give the Yellowjackets a 19-13 lead. The Bulldogs answered with a total of 5 three-pointers in the second and third quarters, compliments of Seamus Johnston, Todd Walter and Calvin Powell. There was no let up on the gas for Sullivan West, gaining a 42-37 lead as the clock for the third quarter ran down. Eldred’s center James Deyermond sat out for much of the third period due to early foul trouble, but the powerhouse returned to the game to quickly score six of his 17 points to finish the night as he dominated a much smaller Sullivan West team. “Our bread and butter are down low,” said Eldred’s Head Coach Bill Furler. “Every now and then everyone gets jump shot happy, but we’re a tough team and it takes a while for them to click, but this is a big win for us, they fought hard today.”
Trai Kaufmann led all scorers with 34 points while Koen McGill contributed nine points to the Yellowjackets’ win. Calvin Powell led the Bulldogs with 15 points, and teammate Seamus Johnston also ended the night in double digits scoring 13.
The Yellowjackets (8-4, 2-1) are set to face the S.S. Seward Spartans in their next league contest on Monday, February 9. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs (3-12, 2-4) will be playing a non-league game against Chapel Field, also on Monday. Both games are scheduled to start at 6:30 PM on the respective teams’ home courts.
