Local Highland small business owner Matt Adams of Adams Small Engine Repairs had a devastating fire completely  destroy his repair shop and garage on his property during the early hours of January 3rd. While Matt was fortunate to escape the fire he did sustain injuries and burns leaving him temporarily unable to work. His very busy engine repair shop was more than a business it was the financial support for his family-including an eight-month-old baby girl. The fire not only took away his livelihood but left the family with significant medical bills. A GoFundMe page has been set up for community donations to help get the Adams family back on its feet as quickly as possible. Please go to Facebook’s Go Fund Me page and the “Help Matt Adams After a Devastating Fire” and donate whatever you can.

No one really knows for sure when ice fishing started but archaeologists have found evidence that shows it dates back over 2,000 years and for many decades it has been a very popular winter sport’s tradition in Sullivan County. If you have never ice fished and want to learn there is a Youth Ice Fishing Derby coming up next week and will have experienced ice fishermen on hand to show the new fishing participants the ropes. The Derby will take place on January 25 from 9-2pm ( weather and ice conditions permitting) at the Ten Mile River Boy Scout Camp Crystal Lake, which is known for great fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish. Bring your own bait and tip-ups. If you have never ice fished before, a limited number of tip-ups and bait will be available, and the sponsoring organizations will have augers onsite to drill the ice holes. The Ice Fishing Derby is sponsored by the Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs of Sullivan County and this fine newspaper-The Sullivan County Democrat, The Boy Scouts, and the Ted Boniface family. The Derby is free and there will be prizes and trophies awarded for young ice fishers under the age of fifteen. Any Derby cancellation notice due to bad conditions will be announced on radio stations WVOS FM (95.9) and WSUL FM (98.3) No snowmobiles or ATVs are allowed at the Derby.
