One of my favorite local charities is the Food for Families and Friends Program run by the Knights of Columbus Council 12571. The Council does not get funding from the Catholic Church and must raise all monies to pay for their charitable projects. The Knights of Columbus was founded in Connecticut in 1881 and is one of the oldest charitable organizations in the country.

Twice a month on alternate Sundays, these heroic men ably assisted I believe by their wives prepare some very delicious homecooked meals and distribute some seven hundred meals to anyone who wants them. They do this meals service free of charge. I volunteer as a delivery person for those people in Highland who are unable to pick up their meals for one reason or another. I can attest that when I get the meals-my car smells pretty amazing!

Due to the COVID pandemic, which is going on for years, and now families struggling with inflation hitting the family budget pretty hard, the Food for Families and Friends Program is as busy as ever. They alternate their distribution sites between St. John Neumann Church in Lord’s Valley and St Ann’s Church in Shohola. Since the pandemic has gone on for so long a period of time, the Knights could use some donations coming in to meet the growing need.

On Saturday, June 25th from 10-3:00pm the Knights of Columbus Council will be sponsoring a Car, Motorcycle and Truck Show in the parking lot of St John’s Church which is located at 705 Route 739 in Lords Valley PA. Vehicle and motorcycle registration for the Show is $20.00 and they are taking vendor applications for $25.00. Father Ed Casey will be on hand to bless all the vehicles. If you are interested in participating with a vehicle for display, make a donation or be a vendor you can call Carlos Quintana at 917-887-3427 or email ceci64@aol.com and please put car show in the subject line.

The Program does a really excellent job at feeding many people in need and can use donations and support for their charities. All proceeds stay within the local communities and help fund community programs and charities. If you are interested in receiving a meal, call or text Frank Fanelli at 347-446-9636. And just so you know-this week’s menu is Beef Tips Dinner. For more information visit www.lordsvalleykofc.org. See you there!

Sunday, June 19th is now a federal holiday. It’s Juneteenth Day and it honors the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. The name Juneteenth is a blend of two words June and nineteenth and for over one hundred fifty-six years it has been the oldest African American holiday with annual celebrations going back to 1866. In celebration the Sullivan County NAACP Branch 2187 in Monticello and the Ethelbert B. Crawford Library will be holding a parade on Saturday, June 18th from 11:30-1pm.

The parade will celebrate the Juneteenth (or Emancipation Day) Holiday and will begin at the Montecello Police Department on Pleasant Street and end in the parking lot of the library. Any local schools, organizations political and service organizations and Government offices are welcome to participate in the parade.

At the conclusion of the parade there will be entertainment, activities, and some interesting vendor tables outside of the library building from 1:00-3pm. Everyone is welcome to attend. For questions and/or to confirm a parade entry contact the NAACP Chapter Secretary, Elaine Williams, at 845-807-6729 or email her at ewillmsster@gmail.com.
