My “Cub Reporter” Jack Costello, reports they made their goal at the Annual Heart A Thon - $80,000.00 which is enough to purchase a new much needed Echocardiogram to help save lives like his over 5 1/2 years ago at CRMC in Harris when he needed a Triple bypass and was sent to Westchester Medical Center Hospital.

He and wife Doris thank everyone in Jeffersonville, Youngsville, White Sulphur Springs, and Callicoon and surrounding areas of Western Sullivan County for their pledges- purchased red & gold Hearts.

Sullivan Renaissance Scholarships: In partnership with the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan Counties, a limited number of scholarships to the college of one's choice will be available for Sullivan County residents.

Eligible applicants must demonstrate that they volunteered in a significant way for a Sullivan Renaissance project during this season. Applicants are asked to describe the experience, the impact it had on them and to support their application with two letters of recommendation. Scholarship amounts vary.

A second scholarship in partnership with the SUNY Sullivan Foundation, where a limited number of full-time and part-time scholarships are available to a Sullivan County high school graduating senior or adult continuing their education at SUNY Sullivan. Eligible applicants are asked to describe their experience, and the impact it had on them. For more info@sullivanrenaissance.org.

The Western Sullivan Public Library announced an Essay Contest due to the library by April 1. Open to every high school student grades 9-12 in the Sullivan West district, they're asking writers to let their imaginations soar as they ponder the future.

Write an essay of between 750 and 1000 words describing life in the year 2050. Looking “back,” tell them how things have changed over three decades. And how many things have remained the same. Applicants are free to tackle the subject from any angle.

Explore changes in politics, the environment, society, science and technology. One can take an editorial/third person tone or discuss matters from a deeply personal point of view. Essays will be evaluated by members of the Western Sullivan Public Library Board of Trustees and judged on the basis of clarity and convincing argument, originality and style.

The decision by the judges is entirely subjective and final. It is meant to come as close as possible to a professional publishing experience. Completed essays can be dropped off at any of the WSPL's three branches, or sent via email to wsplad@gmail.com. Please put “Essay Contest” in the subject line.

On or around May 1, there will be a public event to meet with the writers of the five best essays and invite them to read and discuss their works. The winning essay will be announced at a later date at a meeting of the WSPL Board of Trustees. The writer of the winning essay will receive a $100 prize.

The winning essay will also be submitted for publication in a local newspaper. For more information, visit www.WSPLonline.org or call (845) 482-4350.
