She spent much of her childhood in Perry where she was raised by her mother, uncle John Nance, and stepfather George Payton. In 1958, she married Benjamin George Knapp III of Hurleyville, New York, and together raised six children.
JoAnn lived a life defined by her fierce independence and resilient spirit. She enjoyed Jazz, listening to Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk as a teen. Having lived in numerous states and cities across the country, she eventually made her home in York, Pennslyvania where she lived until her passing.
JoAnn is survived by her children Benjamin, Johnathan, Mary, Kevin, Michael, and Janine; sisters Dee and Sue; eight grandchildren; and members of her extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin George Knapp III.
