JoAnn Louise David Payton  Knapp, age 89, of York, Pennsylvania, passed away on January 14.

The daughter of Lester Ray David and Mildred Nance, JoAnn was born on March 17, 1936, in Perry, Iowa. She spent much of her childhood in Perry where she was raised by her mother, uncle John Nance, and stepfather George Payton. In 1958, she married Benjamin George Knapp III of Hurleyville, New York, and together raised six children.

JoAnn lived a life defined by her fierce independence and resilient spirit. Over the years, she held many professional roles — including administrative assistant, supporting her husband’s family business (The Columbia Hotel, Hurleyville) and dedicating herself to her home and family. She enjoyed Jazz, listening to Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk as a teen. Having lived in numerous states and cities across the country, she eventually made her home in York, Pennsylvania where she lived until her passing.

JoAnn is survived by her children Benjamin, Johnathan, Mary, Kevin, Michael, and Janine; sisters Dee and Sue; eight grandchildren; and members of her extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin George Knapp III.

Family & friends are invited to gather on Friday, April 17 from 11:00am to 1:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello. A memorial mass will follow at 1:30pm at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Broadway and Liberty Street in Monticello.  Interment of her ashes will follow at the Hurleyville Cemetery.
