Joel Hill Sawmill Ends its Season

EQUINUNK, PA - The beauty of the leaves reflected in the Joel Hill Sawmill pond make the last day of tours and sawing at the old mill a bittersweet event. The Mill's last day for year 2019 is Saturday, October 5 - the annual Cider and Doughnuts Day. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The new Cleveland Museum of early industrial machinery will also be open. The event is free. A property of the Equinunk Historical Society, in Equinunk, PA, the sawmill runs solely on water power, as it did in the latter part of the 1800's, drawing its water supply from the lake at Duck Harbor.

Watch the volunteers jockey the big logs onto the cradle in order to run them through the huge saw blade. Then tour the mill with a narrator who will explain the process and the machinery in use. It's a great outing for kids and adults. The mill is located off Route 191, the Hancock Highway. Watch for signs near Lookout. Follow Creek Rd. a short distance to its end, turn right and immediately left. The mill is ahead on the left. If you are interested in becoming part of the volunteer crew, just ask one of the volunteers on duty.

The Equinunk Historical Society in the center of Equinunk will also be open. Tour the museum and the gift shop there. Doors open at noon. For information about the sawmill, the Historical Society, or for directions, call 570-224-6722.
