LIBERTY – During the Liberty Town board meeting on March 16, the board moved forward with several infrastructure, financial and community initiatives while also hearing a public proposal to establish a local commission for the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary.
The meeting started with the board approving a resolution supporting Sullivan County’s submission of a $1 million infrastructure grant aimed at improving sewer distribution systems, including upgrades in the Infirmary Road district.
Financially, the board approved multiple abstracts and reports for the month of February. Additionally, payments tied to Restore New York grants were authorized, including funds for projects on Main Street in Parksville and Liberty, though some of the payments remain contingent on state reimbursement.
Seasonal planning was also a focus as officials set the town’s spring cleanup event for May at the town barn and scheduled a bid opening for the wastewater treatment plant operations later this month.
Board members also discussed ongoing efforts to update the towns’ comprehensive plan, noting low public participation at recent meetings.
The public comment portion of the meeting centered on a proposal to create a Liberty 250th Commission, to prepare for the United States’ 250th anniversary. The speaker expressed that forming a local commission would allow the town to directly access state and federal grant funding for cultural, historical and tourism initiatives, rather than relying solely on county-led efforts.
The proposal included ideas for expanded historical district initiatives, public exhibits and community driven storytelling projects centered on the meaning of “Liberty”. While the board expressed interest, they noted that the concept required further review and a formal placement on a future agenda before any action could take place.
