Liberty talks comp plan

Honors Highway worker for fire rescue

LIBERTY – During the most recent Liberty Town Board meeting, the board approved infrastructure funding, policy updates and heard an emotional expression of gratitude from members of the Liberty Jewish community following a recent house fire.

Among the major items approved during the meeting was the use of $56,610 from the town’s capital reserve fund to complete repairs to a clarifier at the Loomis Wastewater Treatment plant.

The board awarded the general construction contract for the project to P. Brook Contracting as the lowest bidder, contingent upon completion of a 30-day public notice period for use of the reserve funds. The supervisor was authorized to execute all necessary paperwork to initiate and complete the work.

In other business the board approved standard monthly financial reports, budget transfers and noted that the town’s comprehensive plan process was underway. Supervisor Frank DeMayo reported that the first meeting was well attended and encouraged additional public participation at the next session that is scheduled for March 11th.

The meeting then concluded with the public participation segment in which a representative of the Liberty Jewish community formally thanked the Liberty Town Fire Department and local Highway Department employee, Steve Schroeder, for their actions during a recent house fire.

According to remarks delivered at the meeting, Schroeder was operating a snowplow when he observed the blaze and stopped what he was doing to assist. He rescued a mother and her two children from the home amid heavy smoke and flames.

With much gratitude, Schroeder was presented a Certificate of Appreciation from the community for his brave actions that directly saved their lives. In conclusion, the Liberty Jewish community also thanked the several responding fire departments for assisting in the fire.
