Library offers love letter to community

Posted

If you’re driving through Callicoon after dark in the weeks to come, you might want to pull over near the Western Sullivan Public Library and look up.

If you do, you’ll see the WSPL Callicoon branch’s special love letter to the community, a series of colorful pop art displays glowing from the facility’s second story windows.

Installed just in time for an art opening on Valentine’s Day, the process of turning the library windows into a love letter to the Callicoon community began in October, according to Branch Manager Laura Moran.

During the hamlet’s annual Art Walk, held each year on Columbus Day Weekend, the library kicked off what staff dubbed “See Yourself at the Library.” Patrons and visitors were invited to use a special app that would turn their likeness into a piece of pop art, and the creations were kept by the library, which continued to collect more pop art likenesses for months after the Art Walk.

“Anyone could submit,” Moran explained, “people who are patrons here but also people who visit. We are a tourist town, after all.”

In total 19 submissions were brought in, and the library called down the street to artist Tom Bosket of ENGN to judge them all and choose the finalists for the display.

The images Bosket chose offer a “good sample of the community,” Moran said, and they were turned into giant window clings that were mounted in the top floor windows of the Callicoon branch.

Viewable from inside during the day or outside at night (when the library’s lights add a glow), the colorful images are just the start of the art challenges the library hopes to offer up to the community.

Have an idea for another you’d like to see? Moran is all ears! Email del@rcls.org with your idea!
