BETHEL — Two long-time supporters of the Bethel chapter of the International Lions Club, Dawn Ciorciari and Mike Richardson, were honored with the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for the extended support of the organization throughout recent years earlier last month.
The Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, named after the founder of the Lions Club in 1973, is the highest honor given by the Lions Club International to recognize the exceptional service of members who have given back to their communities and their clubs.
As the contributions towards the club, and by extention, the community, from Ciorciari and Richardson extend from outside the Lion’s Club as non-members, this is what makes the bestowing of the award that much more special.
Ciorciari’s spotlight derives from her role in organizing the Bold Gold Open, a golf tournament that directly raises money for the club which in turn boosts funds for the Bethel Outreach Program’s scholarships for local students.
“I am extremely grateful to be recognized for our support of the Lion’s Club. The fact we [Bold Gold Media] get to work alongside them is so special, which makes it that much more of an honor,” Ciorciari said. Sharing her personal award with all those at Bold Gold Media, she considers the award a “team effort.”
Richardson's work is also that which comes from the heart, driven by a love of the community – with a focus on beautification and practicality. Part of his recognition for the award stems from his past assisting the Lions Club with recycling bottles and cans back in the early 90s. Since then, he has made an effort to keep the serenity of the Bethel area’s surroundings, like removing dead trees, painting and maintaining the gazebo, keeping signs clear from vegetation, among other projects.
“I am really grateful that they recognized my contributions to Bethel and Kauneonga Lake,” Robinson said. “I live here, and the people have always been decent to me – thank you to the Lions Club.”
