Marg Van Ginhoven 90th birthday party

Posted

The first mistake that Mike and I made was not getting the weather report the day before we  left for Marg’s party in Roscoe. If we had gone to our house in Callicoon Center the day before the party instead of going directly there from my home in New Jersey, we would have not had to deal with torrential rains on the way.

The birthday party was on Sunday, July 9th from 1PM to 4PM at the Roscoe Rockland Fire Department Community Center. The rains started when we hit the NY state line. One weather forecaster mentioned in the area we went through, it was a one in a thousand year rain event. Mike was dealing with heavy traffic and said if these people weren’t trying to get somewhere at a specific time they should park or turn off the highway. I asked Mike if he thought we should get off the highway and wait for it to subside and he said “no, we are going to get to this party.” After driving through 2 1/2 hours of torrential rain it was less intense as we hit Liberty and we were soon at the party. I spotted Margie sitting at a table and I went up behind her and asked if she knew where the birthday girl was and she turned with surprise. She then took me over to the table where the food was and there at the table I encountered our editor, Derek Kirk who then took a photo of Margie and me. Margie was all decked out with a crown and a sash which read “90 AND FABULOUS”.

I noticed a framed copy of a poem I had written about Margie many years ago along with family pictures, etc.

The party was arranged by Margie’s 3 daughters, Kathy Slaughter, Debbie Carey and Nancy Hadden. Margie has 9 grand-children who were there, 16 great-grand -hildren (14 there) and 2 great great grand children who were not there.

I am so glad I got to attend that party.
