Martin Joseph Giblin, age 103, of Smallwood, NY, passed away on February 4, surrounded by his loving family.
Martin was born on November 13, 1922, in Dromahair, Ireland, son of the late Michael and Jane (McManus) Giblin. The beloved husband to Madeline (McDonnell) Giblin with whom he shared 53 years of marriage, and a devoted father to Rosaleen Murchison (Peter), Michael Giblin, Madeline O’Neill (Mike), Jimmy Giblin, Donald Giblin (Cathy), Kathleen Giblin, Jackie Barden (Mark) and Christine Risoli (Matt). He was also the proud grandfather of 17 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Madeline Giblin, sons Martin (Lis) and Gerry Giblin, grandsons, Gerry Giblin and Daniel Barden and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Giblin.
Martin left home in 1937 at just 14 years old, taking a brave step into the world as a telegram boy in Sligo, 20 miles from Dromahair, County Leitrim, the place he was born and raised. Even at that young age, he showed a quiet independence and courage that would define the rest of his life. He later served in the Irish Army and went on to work as a postman in County Sligo.
In 1947, he made a life-changing decision to emigrate to this country. He was guided by curiosity, courage, and a deep sense of adventure, determined to discover what the wider world might hold for him.
Shortly after arriving, he met and married the love of his life, Madeline. Together they raised their 10 children in the Bronx, NY. In later years, he split his time between Smallwood, NY and Deland, FL.
Martin found happiness in the simple pleasures: playing poker, gardening, birdwatching, fishing, riding his bike in Florida and his yellow moped all around Smallwood. He loved listening to all kinds of music, traveling, cooking and baking.
He was known for his quick wit and warm sense of humor, always ready with a clever remark or a story to make others laugh. Above all, Martin will be remembered for his gratitude, resilience, and unwaveringly positive outlook on life. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched and the family he loved so deeply.
A memorial mass, celebrating the life of Martin Giblin will be held Friday, February 13 at 10:45 am at Saint Barnabas Church, 409 East 241st St, Bronx, NY (parking available in the St. Barnabas parking lot). A repast will immediately follow the memorial mass and will be held at Rory Dolans, 890 McLean Ave, Yonkers, NY.
