MONTICELLO — One of the most prominent attorneys in Sullivan County, Marvin Newberg, passed away yesterday morning at the age of 75.
Word of his sudden death sent shock waves throughout the tight-knit Sullivan County community, as Newberg was a friend to many and involved in a myriad of organizations throughout the county.
Still practicing law from his 33 North St. office in Monticello, Newberg was the town attorney for the Town of Callicoon as well as lead attorney for the Villa Roma Resort and Conference Center for many years.
“Marvin was very knowledgeable in municipal law and took over as Callicoon Town Attorney when Fred Schadt Jr. passed away suddenly,” Callicoon Supervisor Tom Bose said yesterday. “The first time I met him was when he was appointed Town Attorney and he became more than an attorney to the town –he became a great friend of ours.”
Sullivan County Republican Chair Greg Goldstein said his friendship with Marvin Newberg goes back nearly 50 years.
“My wife, Linda [Holmes] grew up next to him in Woodbourne,” Goldstein remembered.
Goldstein said New-berg served as a State Committeeman for the Republican Party as well as County Attorney.
“I’m shocked, he was such a great guy and one guy I would call to talk about issues,” Goldstein said.
Villa Roma Golf Pro Matthew Kleiner, who has been at the Callicoon resort for more than 35 years, remembered Newberg from his days at Kutsher’s Country Club.
“Marvin, Charlie Johnston, Ken Cohen and I would play golf every week,” Kleiner said. “I’m devastated.”
Kleiner said The Sullivan County Democrat Golf Tourney, which Newberg was set to play in next week with his son Ben, will remember him fondly.
“Marvin was The Democrat Golf Tourney,” Sullivan County Democrat Publisher Fred Stabbert III said. “He played in 43 of our 44 tournaments and was such a great supporter not only of our tournament, but was a dear friend of my late father, Fred Jr., and myself.”
