JEFFERSONVILLE --  At 8:28 a.m. Monday morning, a minivan headed eastbound on State Route 52 carrying two children crossed over the double yellow line and struck a school bus headed westbound, according to the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office. The collision occurred in the vicinity of Smith Farm in Jeffersonville.

The driver of the minivan, identified as Charles McAdams of Loch Sheldrake, 70, was confirmed by officials to have passed away at Westchester Medical Center late Monday afternoon.

"[Monday]’s accident between two school vehicles left us shocked and saddened, and Sullivan County extends deep condolences to the family of the driver who died from the crash," said Sullivan County Manager Joshua Potosek. "Our hearts also reach out to the young children and their families, who are enduring the trauma of surviving a serious accident and the many associated injuries, both physical and emotional."

"We appreciate our local school officials for their collaboration, and we thank our first responders," Potosek continued, "for capably undertaking a challenging rescue to extricate victims from the smashed vehicles. A scene involving injured children is among the most difficult to handle, and we are grateful to be served by these firefighters, EMS workers, police officers and dispatchers."

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Charles McAdams, a dedicated driver and beloved member of the Rolling V family who tragically lost his life [Monday] morning in a collision," said Nick Vallone, executive vice president of Rolling V Corp. "Our hearts go out to his family during this difficult time.  Rolling V is offering grief counseling to employees, remains in close communication with the school district, and will support local authority’s investigation into this incident.”

The two children on the minivan school bus were reported to have no apparent injuries but were taken to Callicoon's Garnet Health as a precaution.

On the bus were the driver and an aide, both reportedly received no injuries. The driver refused medical attention while the aide went to Callicoon’s Garnet Health out of precaution. There were no children present on the school bus at the time of the collision.
