Monticello breaks ground on new DeHoyos Park Pool

Community and officials float support

MONTICELLO — Last  week, Monticello officials gathered to watch the groundbreaking of the new DeHoyos Park swimming pool. The project was made possible through the NY SWIMS capital grant which was awarded by Governor Kathy Hochul’s administration last September.

Village Mayor Rochelle Massey highlighted the project’s importance to the community, as well as thanking Kelly Allegra for attending on behalf of Governor Hochul.

“This has been my vision of a vibrant space where families can gather, children can learn vital life skills and neighbors can connect,” said Massey in a statement.

According to Massey, the pool represents more than just a recreational amenity—it also addresses a “critical” need in the community.

“The current lack of convenient pool access limits opportunities for residents of all ages, particularly concerning the life-saving skills of swimming,” stated Massey.

The village also plans to incorporate swimming lessons for both children and adults once the facility is complete.

Massey also pointed to the community-building aspects of the project. “It fosters a welcoming environment where residents of all ages, backgrounds and abilities can interact, strengthen social bonds and foster a stronger sense of belonging within our village,” she said.

Construction is expected to move forward this year, with officials confident the project will meet the needs of residents and provide a long-term benefit for the community.

At the village’s regular meeting that same night, Village Manager James Snowden thanked the board for [their help in] the pool’s groundbreaking.

“Everyone ... put in hard work so we could get a new pool. I think the event came out nice,” stated Snowden. “Thanks to all the people who showed up. It was just a wonderful thing.”

Village Trustee Gordon Jenkins shared the sentiment that the event turned out nice. He also pointed out where, at the park, one could see where the pool is being dug,  which he also complimented.

Monticello resident Yakov Mandelovics [at the meeting] described the groundbreaking as an “exciting moment.”

“We’re all looking out for it. My students from my school—I have a private school here—they enjoy the pool every Monday during summer,” stated Mandelovics. “They keep on asking me ‘Hey can we get another day? We need another day!’ It was the most exciting day for them. I want to thank the board and the manager.”
