Monticello denounces NYSEG rate surge

Posted

MONTICELLO  — Trustee John Barbarite read a resolution opposing the recent electric rate increases to be sent to  multiple New York State Agencies from Village Mayor Rochelle Massey during the Village Board’s regular meeting Wednesday night.

In a formal resolution, the Village of Monticello has called on Governor Kathy Hochul, the state’s Public Service Commission, and NYSEG (New York State Electric and Gas) to reconsider and reverse the rate increase.

Officials contend that the additional costs disproportionately impact low-income households, senior citizens and other vulnerable populations who already allocate a significant portion of their income to utilities.

While NYSEG attributes the rate increase to rising operational costs and investments in green energy initiatives, Monticello leaders are demanding greater transparency. They argue that while the transition to renewable energy is essential, the financial burden should not fall so heavily on consumers through their utility bills. Instead, they assert that green energy projects should be funded as a broader public investment rather than an added expense for everyday ratepayers.

“Whereas, as stewards of the public good, we believe that both the Public Service Commission and the Governor must prioritize the economic well-being of citizens by ensuring that utility rates remain fair, just, and affordable for all residents of Sullivan County,” Barbarite read aloud.

Monticello officials are also urging state leaders to investigate NYSEG’s rate-setting process, calling for an audit of the company’s financial statements to ensure fairness and accountability. Additionally, they advocate for the expansion of energy assistance programs and policies that protect vulnerable communities from excessive utility costs.

The resolution will be formally submitted to Governor Hochul, the Public Service Commission and NYSEG, pressing for immediate action.
