Monticello Kiwanis spreads holiday cheer

MONTICELLO — The Kiwanis Club of Monticello has had an interesting and fulfilling year continuing their tradition of spreading the holiday spirit by assisting local community programs in enhancing the well-being of those in need.

In support of the club mission of improving the world, one child and one community at a time, the club donated $1,500 to their Sweet Dreams Project, which provides children in the foster care program who are transitioning into new surroundings with duffel bags filled with comforting items, such as blanket, pillow, stuffed animal, pj’s, games, personal toiletries, depending on the age and needs of  each child.  It is hoped that these items help improve the self-esteem and lowers the anxiety for the children.

The club and its members also contributed $425 to United Way for Thanksgiving goodies and followed through in December with games and toys as well as a monetary donation to help United Way make the holiday season more enjoyable  for children and families in the community.   In addition, $500 was presented to Federation for the Homeless to the delight and appreciation of Program Administrator Kathy Kreiter.

In the fall, representatives from Ride 2 Survive Sullivan County and Action Toward Independence gave presentations to the Kiwanis Club and well deserved donations were presented to both of these organizations.

An additional guest speaker was Regina McKenny Snead, Exec. Director of Arc Greater Hudson Valley, who gave a  very informative and  compassionate presentation  on the services and programs they provide to children and adults with various degrees of disability in our community.

Monticello Kiwanis President Marvin Rappaport stated he is very proud of the club and its membership for their continual support of the needs of the community residents.  The club meets the first Monday of the Month at Albella’s Restaurant at 6:00 PM.  For further information, visit Monticello NY Kiwanis Club Facebook Page.
