Nail biting home court win for Sullivan West

LAKE HUNTINGTON –– The Sullivan West Lady Bulldogs hosted Burke Catholic Lady Eagles in a non-league basketball matchup. The Lady Bulldogs Sullivan snagged a very close 28-27 win. “Well we won, it was a bit close but we got it done. We had some looks and had shot opportunities, but we couldn’t get shots to fall. We just have to focus on getting better and sinking our shots,” said Coach Pat Donovan of Sullivan West.

The Lady Bulldogs were pulling down plenty of offensive and defensive rebounds to give them multiple chances at the basket each possession. Sullivan West’s Mckala Chevalier was putting in work in the paint with most of the early rebounds helping the Lady Bulldogs build a small lead but in the final minute of the quarter Burke was able to sink a few shots to take the lead 6-8.

Sullivan West opened the second quarter with a full-court press that immediately resulted in a turnover in their favor. That didn’t rattle Burke and they quickly scored on the next possession. Sullivan West’s Sammy Hellerer continued to force turnovers throughout the quarter but couldn’t seem to convert them into points until about halfway in when she cashed an inside jumper to make it a two-point game.

Ella Herbert was able to sink a three-pointer to put the Lady Bulldogs up by one point. This was the beginning of an 11-point run by Sullivan West, who finally seemed to find their offensive rhythm. Heading into the half Sullivan West was up 19-10 over the visiting team.

The Lady Eagles seemed to be the only ones finding the basket, going on a quick run at the top of the third quarter. By the two-minute mark, Burke had obliterated Sullivan West’s lead and tied the game at 19. Sullivan West struggled to find the basket, unable to score until the late but maintained a six-point lead heading into the final quarter.

Sullivan West opened the fourth quarter with intense defensive hustle, but it was Burke who scored first, bringing the score within one basket.

With Burke down by only one point they seemed determined to overcome Sullivan West’s lockdown defense. With one minute remaining they did just that and put up an inside layup to take a 27-26 lead over the home team.

Ella Herbert was able to score off an inbound play to put Sullivan West back on top by one with 40 seconds left in the game. Luckily, Sullivan West was able to close out the nail-biting game without allowing Burke to score again finishing 28-27 over the Lady Eagles.
