SULLIVAN COUNTY  — Sullivan County is one of the fastest-growing job markets in the Hudson Valley, according to its latest Labor Market Profile from the New York State Department of Labor. It grew the fastest in the Hudson Valley Region for private sector job growth.

Private sector employment in Sullivan County rose by 3.2 percent year-over-year, with 800 new private-sector jobs added between May 2024 and May 2025. Month-to-month, the county also saw a healthy increase of 2.4 percent, gaining 600 private-sector jobs since April.

Leading the way in County job growth was the private education and health services sector, which added 500 jobs over the year — a 6.0 percent increase, bringing total jobs in that category to 8,900. Close behind was professional and business services, which saw a 4.5 percent annual increase (+100 jobs), and manufacturing, which grew by 4.8 percent (+100 jobs).

The leisure and hospitality sector also showed strong monthly gains — adding 400 jobs between April and May (an 11.4 percent jump), though it remained flat compared to last year.

In terms of raw totals, Sullivan County’s total non-farm employment hit 31,900 jobs in May 2025 — up 2.9 percent from the previous May.

Government jobs were also up slightly, adding 100 jobs over the year (a 1.6 percent increase). Meanwhile, some categories remained flat, including mining, logging and construction, which held steady at 1,300 jobs — though that sector is down 7.1 percent year-over-year.

Sullivan ranked highest among other nearby counties. These include Kingston MSA (+1.1 percent), followed by Rockland County (+0.7 percent), Westchester County (+0.5 percent), and the Kiryas Joel-Poughkeepsie-Newburgh MSA (+0.4 percent).  Additionally, Putnam County was the only area that declined over the period – down 0.8 percent.

Jobs data for June is expected to be released on Thursday, July 17.
