Paul Edward Hubert of Youngsville passed away at home on March 2, 2023 surrounded by family. Paul was born in Roscoe, NY on September 29, 1940 to Charles and Ester (Freidenstine) Hubert of Mileses, NY. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Elizabeth Ann (Fries) Hubert, his children Jill and James Simon of Liberty and Paula and Jim Wilson of Youngsville, his grandsons Jeremy and Justin Simon, his sister June Ellmauer, nieces Susan (David) Munyan and Cindy Ellmauer, nephew Michael (Trish) Ellmauer, several cousins, especially Walter Hubert his life-long friend, brothers-in-law Richard (Helen Marie) and Fred (Cathy) Fries, his sister-in-law (Sid) Grossman, his great-nieces and great-nephew and many friends who were like family to him. He was pre-deceased by his parents, his parents-in-law Gertrude and Norvin “Buster” Fries, and his brother-in-law Jack Ellmauer. 

Paul’s working life took him fron Sullivan County Wholesalers where he worked as a counter salesman and then in kitchen design to Agway Energy where he worked as a service technician and retired as a systems design and sales rep. After his retirement he worked at Stan’s Batworks and Steingarts and Associates until he fully retired. 

Paul was happiest when surrounded by family and friends, and especially when they joined him in sports or outdoor pursuits. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing. He was a past member of the Woods Pond Trap Shooting League along with his daughter Paula. Paul and Betty were members of the Happy Footers Square Dance Club and enjoyed many Friday evenings dancing with friends. 

Paul was a fan of all sports, but baseball and softball were his favorites. He played many years in the Liberty Men’s Slowpitch League and on the Seniors team. He was an ASA Softball umpire and spent several years umpiring local high school games along with Betty and Paula. Paul also spent countless hours playing catch or catching for pitching lessons, and countless miles in the car going to practices and games along the east coast. He was so proud to teach his grandsons the art of the game and watch them play through the years. He was the official team consultant and volunteer umpire for the boys’ Cal Ripken teams. Paul spent several years coaching in the Monticello Women’s Slowpitch League, sharing his love and knowledge of the game with his players who dubbed themselves “Paul’s Princesses.” Even in his final days he was reading books about Yogi Berra and the Yankees.

Paul was a member of the volunteer fire service for more than 60 years, beginning as a member in the Fremont Center-Mileses Fire Department and then joining the Youngsville Fire Department when he and Betty moved there. Always volunteering his time, there weren’t many department pancake breakfasts or roast beef dinners that he missed.

Retirement allowed Paul to pursue many of his interests including woodworking, and the social aspect of the craft fairs where he sold his products. He and Betty traveled widely, often with their close friends and always came home with stories of their adventures to share. His interest in current events and local affairs brought him to meetings of the Town of Callicoon Town Board on a regular basis. A chance meeting at one of those meetings with Dr. Nancy Hackett combined with his love of history resulted in collaboration on a project researching and documenting the history of one room schoolhouses in the western part of Sullivan County. The result is the book “One-Room Schoolhouses,” which Paul proudly coauthored.

Betty, Paula and Jill would like to thank Hospice of Orange and Sullivan for their support and care of Paul. His entire team went above and beyond, and they would like to thank Theresa, Jen, Maria, Cindy, Courtney and especially Zee for their compassion and commitment. Also, they would like to thank everyone at the Oncology Treatment Center at Garnet Health Catskill, particularly Mary and Kathy who continued to call and visit after Paul’s treatments were finished.

Friends and family may call to share memories and fellowship on Friday, March 10, from 4 to 7 PM at Stewart Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville. A firematic services will be held at 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Friends may also call Saturday morning from 10:00 to 12:00 PM at the funeral home. A funeral service will follow at 12:30 PM at the funeral home. Donations may be made to the Hospice of Orange and Sullivan, the Youngsville Fire Department or the Jeffersonville Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
