Paul Gilbert Jones, MD, 85 of Boynton Beach, FL passed away on April 3. Paul was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1940 to Leon Jones and Eva Kushner Jones. After graduating from Erasmus High School he attended Harpur College for his undergraduate degree and attended Albert Einstein School of Medicine where he received his medical degree. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam war as a surgeon in a MASH unit, received a Bronze Star and was honorably discharged with the rank of Major. Paul returned to NYC and completed additional training and fellowships at The Hospital for Special Surgery/Joint Disease to become a certified Orthopedic Surgeon.
After moving his practice to upstate NY, Paul met and married Jessica Roth in 1975 in Liberty, NY. Paul and Jessica were both active members of the community, spending the bulk of their lives in Sullivan County, where they raised their four children. Paul served as Chief of Surgery at Harris Hospital and as Chair of the local Medical Society.
Paul was well known for his extensive aquarium setup where he raised a wide variety of cichlids, catfish, snapping turtles and snakes in huge tanks. He was a voracious reader, interested in subjects ranging from science fiction to biographies, science, and nature journals to MAD magazine. He enjoyed giving visitors tours of his fish acquisitions and then gifting them with copies of “The Making of the Atomic Bomb” by Richard Rhodes. He enjoyed travel, especially annual large family vacations - first at Disney World and later, on cruise ships.
Recently, Paul and Jessica had retired in Florida to enjoy proximity to family and easier winters. He is survived by Jessica, his wife of 50 plus years, his 4 children, Alexander Jones and his wife Maria Cleveland; Samantha Jones and her husband Louis Weintraub; Zachary Jones and his wife Kristina Jones; Lawrence Jones and his wife Amelia Wolf; 8 grandchildren: Elliot, Matthew, Ethan, Zoe, Max, Mae, Archer and Emmett. He is also survived by a sister, Laura Jones, a sister-in-law, Amy Roth, a nephew, Andrew Kyburz and a brother-in-law, Matthew Roth and his wife Barbara. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Albert Einstein School of Medicine.
A memorial service will be held at Beth Israel Memorial Chapel in Boynton Beach on April 12 at 11AM.
