Town of Fallsburg
To the editor:
Friday, April 25 is Arbor Day, a day well worth celebrating, especially in the Town of Fallsburg where we give license to developers to clear cut forests and demolish wildlife habitats to accommodate high density housing and paved parking lots.
The Town recently added to this effort in Mountaindale by chopping down a stand of old growth crab apple trees that were about to bloom and towering pine trees to make room for… a pickle ball court. What senior citizen wouldn’t relish the opportunity to sprain an ankle or fracture a hip on a main street in full view of our local post office?
For over 20 years a group of dedicated citizens under the banner of the Mountaindale Action committee have planned, planted and maintained gardens throughout the hamlet. No member of this group was officially advised let alone consulted about this alleged Sullivan 180 project. Instead of a welcoming little park we now have an eyesore with the potential for liability.
Trees are precious. They provide shade and shelter for all manner of living things. This Arbor Day consider planting a tree to honor a beloved friend or family member and make a lasting contribution not only to the planet but to your own legacy as well.
