To the editor:
I am very proud to be an American. Our country has a long tradition of welcoming people from other countries, helping them to assimilate, and benefiting from their contributions to our culture and our communities.
As Ronald Reagan famously said, “We lead the world because, unique among nations, we draw our people – our strength – from every country and every corner of the world. And by doing so, we continuously renew and enrich our nation.”
Reagan believed, as do I, that immigrants are a big part of what makes America great.
It is therefore extremely disheartening to witness the wholesale and indiscriminate vilification of immigrants that has become the main rallying cry for Reagan’s former political party.
I believe Reagan would be appalled by the blatant lies spread by Donald Trump and JD Vance (e.g. “they’re eating the pets”) and Reagan would never have killed a bi-partisan border security bill, supported by the Border Patrol, for political gain.
Sadly, Trump did exactly that. I urge my fellow citizens to reject Trump’s anti-immigrant hatred and to vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. The Harris-Walz team will deliver strong border security without vilifying those who seek a better life here in America.
