United States – It was a red wave that overtook the nation Tuesday night as former President Donald Trump convincingly triumphed over Vice President Kamala Harris for the highest seat in the land, President of the United States.
The Republican Party also rode the momemtum of Trump’s turnout to take over control of the United States Senate while possibly keeping control of the House of Representatives.
While many were somewhat suprised by the extraordinary voter turnout and large margin of victory in the president’s race, Sullivan County voters were more tempered in their support.
New York Assembly 100th District race
While Trump rode to a big victory over Harris in Sullivan County, 19,704-13,977, his coattails were too short to help several of his fellow Republican candidates in Sullivan County.
Newcomer Paula Kay, a Democrat, who was running for a seat in the New York State Assembly’s 100th District, was neck-and-neck with Republican Lou Ingrassia, 14,371-14,290, in Sullivan County.
However, Kay turned the tide in Orange County, where she outpaced hometown candidate Ingrassia, 11,486-9,235.
“I am ready, I have been ready, to help out working families in this district,” Kay said.. “I thought I would get some rest today, but it has actually been a restless morning working on relationships and what’s next to do. I am ready to hit the ground running on day one.”
Kay told the Democrat that she didn’t feel much nervousness on election night as votes came in, noting that she and her team felt confident in their platform on her path to victory. She also said that keeping the Assembly representative in Sullivan County was important.
United States Congress 19th District race
In the race for NY-19 seat in the U.S. Congress, Democratic challenger Josh Riley earned 180,528 votes to defeat incumbent Republican Marc Molinaro’s 176,850 in their rematch following the 2022 election.
However, Molinaro won in Sullivan County, with his 18,553 votes to Riley’s 13,932 votes.
New York State Senate 51st District race
In the race for the seat representing the 51st District in the New York State Senate, incumbent Republican Peter Oberacker prevailed with 87,118 votes to his opponent, Democratic challenger Michele Frazier’s 58, 201 votes.
These results were mirrored in the Sullivan County polls as well, where the current senator won, 19,040 votes to 13,379.
