Bethel Woods is an amazing venue with incredible event staff. Every year, we look forward to reviewing the summer concert series line-up and every year it continues to lack diversity and reflects a limited and specific range within music. What might it look like to balance honoring music legends while bringing in more contemporary, younger, and popular performers (outside of country and rock) that reflect the diversity of America? Indeed, it is only because places like Woodstock gave younger performers an opportunity that they went on to become legends. I would imagine it is probably quite a challenge to book performers at a medium-sized venue such as Bethel Woods, but I am just hoping that the gaps in this year’s line-up can be a little more reflective of what I would imagine many different types of people would want to see/hear. With a mission to inspire, educate and empower individuals through the arts and humanities, Bethel Woods can surely do a better job of securing and promoting musicians and artists that reflect America. Just imagine how many more audience members and guests of Bethel Woods could be inspired and empowered when they see and hear performers that look a little more like them.
