PARKSVILLE — A major paving and safety improvement project is underway on State Route 17 between the hamlet of Parksville and the Village of Liberty.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Friday that the state is investing $18 million to resurface and upgrade the stretch of highway, which serves as a major gateway into the Catskills and carries residents, visitors, commercial traffic, students and summer camp families through Sullivan County.

The project will cover about 7.6 centerline miles, or 30.4 lane miles, of pavement. Work will include resurfacing, concrete joint repairs, upgraded guiderails, new signs, pavement markings and audible rumble strips intended to help prevent vehicles from leaving the roadway, according to the Governor’s Office.

Ramp improvements are also planned at Exits 98, 99, 100, 100A and Short Avenue.

“State Route 17 is the front door to the Catskills for residents and visitors seeking the region’s natural beauty and attractions,” Hochul said in the announcement. “The work being done now will make their trips safer, smoother and more reliable—all while supporting the region’s economy.”

The state said the section of Route 17 carries an average of 19,400 vehicles per day during the summer, including a significant amount of commercial traffic.

Construction is expected to take place over two seasons, with completion anticipated by winter 2027. One lane of traffic will remain open during the work, though motorists should expect ramp closures and minor delays.

Sullivan County Manager Josh Potosek said the project will strengthen a key transportation corridor for the county.

“Reliable infrastructure is critical to the quality of life and economic vitality of Sullivan County, and we appreciate Governor Hochul’s commitment to maintaining and improving the roads that connect our communities,” Potosek said.

The New York State Department of Transportation will provide updates throughout construction. Motorists can check travel conditions through 511NY.
