There are some basic rules a lot of players get confused about. I’d like to try to make it simpler to understand.
1. Out of bounds. Like in other sports golf has an Out of Bounds rule. The part of the course that you can’t play on. It is defined by white stakes or posts and sometimes white painted lines. The rules are simple. If you hit a ball outside the white stakes, you must replay the shot with a one stroke penalty.
2. Penalty Areas. This is an area which relief with a one stroke penalty is allowed if the players ball comes to rest there. There are two different types of penalty areas, distinguished by the color used to mark them: yellow penalty areas (marked with yellow lines or stakes) or red penalty areas (marked with red lines or stakes).
You can always try to play a ball out of a penalty area just as it lies. If that’s not an option, you can take stroke and distance relief and go back to where you hit the previous shot and take a one stroke penalty.
The second option is called back on the line relief. You may use the reference point where your ball went into the penalty area and go back on the “line’ up to where your original ball was hit and drop a ball there. One shot penalty applies there too.
The penalty area marked with red stakes gives you a third option. If your ball crossed into the penalty area and you can’t play it, you can drop the ball up to two club lengths from the red line or stakes. Again, one shot penalty.
Last week I bet on the US Women’s Open out at Pebble Beach. I had a $51 profit from my Rickie Fowler victory, so I bet on Draft Kings a 6 women team.
I had said I liked Rose Zhang, Yuka Saso and Long shot Alison Corpuz. Well, my buddies who read the column said I don’t even know these women.
I added three others for a $15 entry and got back $70 on that team, profiting $55. Being that Zhang and Saso were favorites and low odds, I went with Corpuz for top-10 top-5 and $3 to win at 100 to 1. Boo Ya, she wins the US Womens Open. A $7 investment turned into another $350.
Hopefully I can give you readers some more good picks. British Open coming up next week and I’m leaning towards Rory McIlroy. This week I’m just going to bet a little bit on Ryan Fox (80 to 1) and Adrian Meronk (90 to 1) for top 20s and some to win in the Scottish Open.
