WEST POINT — The finale of the winter season is fast approaching, and the student athletes competing in Indoor Track and Field have been working hard during what is likely the toughest season of the year.

With winter weather, and long bus rides to West Point or the Armory for meets, the athletes are at the whim of winter weather and the Army Black Knights’ schedule.

The county’s athletes participate in developmental meets at SUNY Sullivan, which are a great way to compete against other athletes in the county while preparing for the scored meets.

Reaching, and succeeding in, Sectionals in Indoor Track is the toughest of the three seasons as teams are broken down into just two divisions, rather than four. The B division, which includes every county school except for Monticello, has 22 teams worth of competitors vying for a limited number of spots.

Difficulty aside, a handful of local athletes found success at Sectionals, moving on to the State Qualifiers for the chance to compete at States.

Sullivan West’s Keely Schock won the pole vault as the Lady Bulldogs finished 6th in B.

Anna Furman placed first in the 3000m, 1500m and 1000m. Her times in the 3000 and 1500 have her in the Top-10 nationwide.

Kendall McGregor won the 55 meter hurdle at Sectionals, breaking a TV school record that has stood since 1997.

The Tri-Valley boys had a few first place finishes as well with Van Furman (3200m), Craig Costa (1000m) and the 4x800 relay team (Craig Costa, Van Furman, Wyatt Morton and Aaron Edwards) taking the top spot.

Aside from first place winners, there were a handful of top-3 finishes at the meet as well, which secured a place at State Qualifiers.

Liberty’s Sydania Foster finished second in the 300m. Sullivan West’s Jasmine Green placed third in the 600m. Gracyn Halloran, also from Sullivan West, finished third in the 1000m, and the Lady Bulldogs took a third place spot in the 4x800 relay.

Fallsburg’s Jordyn Wall-Carty placed third in the long jump and Adira-Virginia Green-Padilla got third place in the shot put.

Tri-Valley’s Amelia Mickelson placed second in the 3000m and Kendall McGregor placed third in the 55m.

The Lady Bears finished second in the Section, trailing Rondout Valley by just four points.

Sullivan West finished sixth overall and Fallsburg came in ninth out of the 22 teams competing.

Sullivan West’s Peter March placed second in the 55mh and third in the 300m. Grant Gorr placed third in the shot put.

For the Tri-Valley boys, Kane Poje finished second in the weight throw. Van Furman finished third in the 1600m and Wyatt Morton placed third in the 1000m.

The Tri-Valley boys placed second in the section, Sullivan West finished in 10th.

In the A division, Monticello’s Gabriela Almonte placed third in the 55m.
