NEVERSINK — Troop 1097 Boy Scout Gregson McKenna presented a new project before the town board: a portable shed for the Route 42 Little League ball field.
McKenna is looking to present his project to the Boy Scout Board of Review for his earning of Eagle Scout Honor.
McKenna told the board of how a couple weeks ago, he reached out to Larry Whipple, who’s in charge of the field, asking if Whipple had any Eagle Scout projects McKenna could undertake.
“He [Whipple] told me that he needed a shed,” explained McKenna. “So I’m here tonight to propose a 5x10 four-foot tall shed.”
He gave a graphic for the town board to look at. McKenna detailed that, in the graphic, only a frame was built and the following pages he gave had everything priced out save for the board and batten, which will be donated by Gregson’s former Scoutmaster and Eagle Project Mentor Neil Terwiliger.
Town of Neversink Supervisor Chris Mathews noted that McKenna had a conversation with him about a week prior to the meeting. McKenna also had a conversation with Councilman Scott Grey.
“One of the things we talked about is that it’s a structure that can be picked up and moved if necessary,” recounted Mathews.
Grey commended the design while making a suggestion that McKenna put bracing in diagonal, in the upper corners of the frame. He reasoned because, when the shed is moved, it won’t rock on someone moving it.
Grey also stated that he insisted on shingles and not tin, being a “safety thing” Grey requested.
“Make sure you get [in contact with] who is going to maintain this after you’re gone,” requested Grey. “We would like it to be Little League. Just make sure that they know that they’re going to be responsible for maintaining it.”
Mathews raised inquiry on the materials to build the shed, which Grey recounted the board and batton being put on.
Grey also recalled of McKenna’s conversation that discussed, alongside the board and batton, stain that matches what’s already around the nearby buildings.
The motion for McKenna to build the portable shed was made by Grey and seconded by Councilman Jim Schmidt. With nobody in opposition, the motion was moved.
