Second person dies following White Lake water rescue

Posted

BETHEL — New York State police and local fire departments have released more information regarding the water rescue operation on White Lake this past Sunday.

Police confirmed on Tuesday that a second person has died after emergency responders pulled three family members from the water when their upstate vacation ended in tragedy.

Afrid Haider, 34, passed away Tuesday, two days after 18-year-old Basir Amin was declared deceased.

Basir Amin’s sister, 21-year-old Nasrin Amin, reportedly remains in critical condition.

The family from the Bellerose neighborhood of Queens had rented an AirBnb on the shores of White Lake and were enjoying the water when the situation changed very quickly.

State Police said that Basir Amin began to struggle in the water when the other two victims jumped in to try and save him.

The situation occurred within the Kauneonga Lake Fire District. Andrew Liff of the White Lake Fire Company dove down and surfaced with the first victim who was brought to shore where life saving measures were attempted by Bethel Ambulance and Hatzolah.

“Due to the depth of the water, retrieval of the remaining two victims proved challenging,” the Kauneonga Lake Fire Department said in a statement. “[Firefighter Andrew] Liff of White Lake left the water to retrieve dive equipment to assist in the recovery while Kauneonga Lake Captain Pammer remained in the water to maintain the location of the victims. When Liff returned to the water, he and Pammer together were able to recover the victims and bring them to shore, where they were also handed off to Bethel Ambulance and Hatzolah crews who initiated life saving measures immediately.”

State Police have referred to Afrid Haider as Basir’s and Nasrin’s uncle, but a GoFundMe page created by family members refers to him as their brother-in-law.

“Please keep Nasrin in your prayers so she can get better [and] she can recover,” said older brother Faruque Amin in an emotional video shared to the family’s GoFundMe page where he thanked everyone for their support.

The GoFundMe, which can be found at tinyurl.com/2xerrrfh, has raised over $116,000 to benefit the family as of Thursday.

“Sometimes all we can do as first responders is give someone a chance,” the White Lake Fire Company wrote. “The heroic, selfless acts shown [Sunday] by firefighter Andrew Liff and fellow first responders, between fire, EMS and police, gave three individuals from one family a chance out of this terrible split second tragedy.”
