JEFFERSONVILLE — At 9:40 Friday morning, the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office conducted a traffic stop in Jeffersonville of two individuals which led to their arrests.
Following the traffic stop the Sheriff's Dept. executed a search warrant at 4714 NY State Route 52 in the Village of Jeffersonville where they found drugs, drug paraphernalia and more than $1,000 in cash.
More than a dozen Sullivan County Sheriff personnel and a K-9 unit were at the scene during the search of the house, which also included the Sheriff's Dept.'s Bearcat vehicle.
The K-9 also searched around the house as well as inspections by the Sheriff's Dept. personnel.
Sullivan County Sheriff Michael Schiff, who was at the scene, said, “We found out about the squatters and potential drug activity at that location as a result of our foot patrol program.
“Members of the public complained to the deputies they saw on patrol in Jeffersonville and that is what started the investigation,” Schiff said.
According to the Sheriff's Dept., residents from the house were walking into Jeffersonville and panhandling in the Peck's parking lot. After Peck's employees kicked them out, the Sheriff's Dept. said they tried the fire department's lot and were also kicked out.
The alleged panhandlers then went to the Sunoco in the village and, according to the Sheriff's Dept., their foot patrol program brought back the many complaints.
According to police, the owner of the 4714 NY State Route 52, Phyllis Danas, had passed away and that is how the people were able to stay in the house.
The residence was under investigation and the traffic in and out of the residence indicated it as a “drug prone location,” police said.
Arrested were Michael McCoy, 42, of Jeffersonville, who was charged with two counts of drug possession and criminal possession of drug paraphernalia. McCoy was remanded to the Sullivan County Jail on the aforementioned charges based upon his past criminal conviction status.
Timothy Holley, 38, the driver of the vehicle, was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and multiple tickets as well, police said. He was released on an appearance ticket.
The Sheriff's Dept. was assisted in the investigation by Homeland Security Investigators, Sullivan County District Attorney Investigators and Village of Liberty Police.
